About the Institution

[Tokyo Bay Urayasu Ichikawa Medical Center] is in Urayasu City, Chiba Prefecture. Although it is a relatively new hospital that opened in 2009, it provides significant support to local medical care. It is a life-saving emergency center designated by Chiba Prefecture and has a well-developed emergency medical system. It is also characterized by many pioneering initiatives, such as online medical consultations and the introduction of an unprecedented education system. Aiming for "a new hospital image that can be used worldwide," the staff, including doctors and nurses, work together to provide high-quality medical care. The nursing department's philosophy is "fulfilling our mission as a life supporter for the people of the community," and it aims to provide nursing care that satisfies the local community. The department supports each staff member in connecting with patients and advancing their careers.

A Conversation with Nursing Director, Tamae Suzuki

This hospital changes its uniforms every five years. Each time, a uniform selection committee is formed to select the uniforms, and the theme has always been, 'Choose something easy for us to wear and decide for ourselves.

This time, we introduced Classico uniforms mainly in the ICU and emergency outpatient department. Since we move around a lot in these departments, ease of movement is essential. In addition, since we often assist with examinations and medical procedures, it was also important that the fabric be durable, even when soiled.

They are also very stylish. This is very important; we wear scrubs for most of the day and for 16 hours on night shifts. Since we wear them for a long time, working in something we like motivates the staff. The staff have been very pleased with them. Many nurses from other teams have expressed their envy.

This time, we used beige as a new color and were a little worried at first. But once we started using it, everyone looked great. They said that it's stylish but also easy to move around in. For example, it's easy to raise your arms, the pants don't slip down when you squat, and underwear lines don't show.

I also liked that it was customizable. The pockets were double-layered so that small items could be separated. Also, since we use a PHS for medical use, we had a strap holder added. Of course, it costs extra, but we wanted to be particular about it, and we're grateful that they were so responsive and accommodating.

The uniform primarily creates the image of the profession. Our generation worked under the idea that 'nurses' uniforms must be white' and that 'we must uphold the traditional image.' However, times have changed a lot; for example, some people want to become nurses because they admire the professional nurses in medical dramas.

The selection committee had always voiced a desire to wear uniforms that reflected their individuality, and the policy was to acknowledge staff diversity. As times change, the medical and nursing fields must also change. Tokyo Bay would like to take the lead in this new challenge of introducing modern uniforms hospital-wide.

The scrubs are made of the perfect fabric. Uniforms are washed industrially, so they tend to fade and become thin. It has been more than six months since we introduced these scrubs, but that hasn't happened; they remain soft and comfortable to wear.

Staff members say they are 'easy to move in.' This time, we introduced them to departments that involve a lot of movement, such as the emergency outpatient department and ICU, so ease of movement was essential. Nurses can be so focused on caring for patients that they don't have time to care for themselves. Wearing a comfortable uniform that doesn't restrict movement makes it easier for nurses to work.

Tokyo Bay Urayasu Ichikawa Medical Center has many young head nurses, so in the past, it was often said that it was difficult to tell them apart from the younger staff. Since the last change, we have been using different colors for scrubs according to job title, and Classico's scrubs were a great match in that respect, as they come in a wide variety of colors. For example, it is convenient for interns to be distinguished by color, even when they rotate between departments.

Of course, it also helps to increase motivation. Our hospital has a blog on our website, and we are working to spread the honest voices of our staff to the world. We call this 'fan creation,' and the more people who know the hospital's name, the harder we are motivated to work.

I think uniforms are the best tool for expressing ourselves. This hospital is very positive about trying new things, and people who want to be on the cutting edge gather here. The selection of these scrubs also met that desire.

This uniform change had a theme, and four things were important: a unisex design, a choice of colors, comfort that can withstand long hours of work, and a cool appearance. Classico's scrubs were the perfect fit.

We ordered products from various companies, and Classico sent us many different types. We looked at so many that we didn't know which one was best. We told them what we wanted, and our representative was able to select the best fit for us, which was very helpful.

During our conversation, Classico was the only company that asked what our concept or theme was and what our intention was for introducing the uniforms. They also responded to our emails quickly, which was another reason we chose them. This is not just flattery!

After actually wearing them, I like the shape and comfort the most. The sleek material doesn't feel like work clothes, so it looks neat when welcoming visitors. The staff also praise them for being easy to move in. The cool scrubs are often a draw for people who come to work at the hospital.

We recently had our first male head nurse. The uniforms we had been wearing were only for women and were out of date, but this time, we could introduce designs for men. We introduced uniforms for both men and women but allowed individuals to choose their preferred design. Many women also prefer men's designs. I am glad we could introduce something that suits this age of diversity.
