Kyorin University Faculty of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology

Implemention record

The Department of Anesthesiology at Kyorin University School of Medicine has anesthesiologists, intensive care physicians, pain clinicians, and palliative care physicians who are involved not only in anesthesia management in the operating room but also in a wide range of clinical activities outside the operating room.

Our hospital's central operating room manages anesthesia for approximately 7,000 surgeries annually. For patients scheduled for surgery to undergo surgery safely and recover smoothly, it is important that a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals not only manages anesthesia but also provides consistent perioperative management throughout the pre-, intra-, and post-operative periods.

To that end, our hospital opened a perioperative management center in 2017 and has been working on various initiatives to ensure that patients can undergo surgery safely and with peace of mind and be discharged without complications.

Purpose and impressions of introducing team lab coats and scrubs

We interviewed doctors from Kyorin University Faculty of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology about their impressions of Classico's lab coats.

"It's so light and soft you don't even feel like you're wearing it"

Professor and Head of Department of Anesthesiology, Kyorin University School of Medicine, Tomoko Yorozu

The job of an anesthesiologist is to protect the lives of patients undergoing invasive surgery. For patients, it is natural that anesthesia for surgery is safe. It is the same as expecting a safe flight when boarding an airplane.

Anesthesiologists play a role similar to that of pilots. During anesthesia, they constantly monitor the patient's physical condition, administer anesthetic drugs, operate anesthesia equipment, sometimes rush to help in emergencies, perform emergency treatment quickly, and often move the patient's body.

I believe that the operating room clothes worn in this job are essential as they serve as a switch to turn on the work, but most of the operating room clothes I have worn so far have been uncomfortable. And until now, I thought that operating room clothes were just like that, so I didn't know anything about them.

What I felt when I introduced the Classico operating clothes this time was that they were more comfortable to wear than any other operating clothes I had used. As an anesthesiologist who wears operating clothes almost all day, I like how soft and light they are and how they feel like you're not even wearing them. They also feel gentle on the skin.

Another good point is that they don't wrinkle easily and are stretchy. I believe that a uniform should become a part of you completely, and PACK scrubs make it easy to move around in them, even when you bend over or look down. They don't wrinkle easily, so they also feel clean.

These uniforms will make young doctors want to work in the anesthesiology department and become colleagues in the field. Naturally, patients will also be more likely to like them.

The Department of Anesthesiology is an important department in the hospital that is responsible for ensuring the safety of surgery, post-operative care in the intensive care unit, and pain management. That's why it was great to introduce uniforms that young doctors would be happy with. I think the hospital executives were also impressed with the change in uniforms when they saw the members of the Department of Anesthesiology working hard with a good feeling.

"You feel happier when you work wearing the Classico"

Associate Professor/Chief of the Department of Anesthesiology, Kyorin University School of Medicine, Dr. Hiroyuki Seki

I think this is true in any industry, but attracting new staff is a top priority for the survival of an organization. I have striven to create an environment that makes trainees want to join and makes employees feel happier.

For example, a young member of the medical department asked us to change the mattresses in the on-call room to something more comfortable. We negotiated with the hospital to make the change, as we thought improving sleep quality would improve work performance.

As we continued to make these efforts, one day, I saw a TV program called "Changing the World with Design," in which a small local factory that was not hiring new staff had successfully recruited new staff after changing their uniforms to more stylish ones.

We thought this could also be used in the anesthesiology department, which prompted us to change the uniform. When first-year residents train in the anesthesiology department or perform surgery during their surgical training, they unconsciously see anesthesiologists.

If the anesthesiologists we see daily wear excellent scrubs, it will make an impact. If this inspires some residents to have a good impression of the anesthesiology department, it may lead to more people aiming to work in anesthesiology. We also thought that it would increase the motivation of everyone currently working there.

We considered various options when choosing the uniform. Since it's our costume, we wanted as many people as possible to participate, so we chose Classico.

The difference in design of Clasico scrubs is immediately apparent. Just as wearing clothes you like in your daily life makes you feel good, I feel a difference in my level of happiness when I wear Clasico scrubs to work.
I think we're getting closer to what we aimed for with the uniform change.

"We have become more conscious of working in the same direction with the team's philosophy."

Assistant Professor, Department of Anesthesiology, Kyorin University School of Medicine, Dr. Akira Motoyasu

I first encountered Classico products in 2010 when I worked for a second hospital. Since then, I have been a fan of Classico and still wear them today. Before I discovered Classico, the fabric of my lab coats was thin and crisp, so I liked its design and durability. What particularly impressed me was the suit-like design on the back, which I thought was very cool.

This was the first time I wore Classico scrubs, which were not stressful. Before they were introduced, the surgical uniforms we used were rigged to move in, so when we wanted to nap during shifts, everyone would change into other scrubs, but now that doesn't happen.

They have good stretch, so performing anesthesia procedures is not difficult. The pockets are large, so I like them because they can hold everything I need for treatment, and they don't fall out easily.

I was responsible for selecting the scrubs' color and embroidery design this time. After surveying the medical staff many times, I was conscious of creating an excellent design different from others and easily recognizable as anesthesia at a glance. I was particular about the font of the embroidery and other things. I was delighted when I saw the finished embroidery, and it was much fun making the scrubs.

One of the results of introducing team scrubs is that the team has become more united. Anesthesiology is a unique medical department with much diversity. At first glance, it may not seem like teamwork. Still, I feel that this has strengthened the sense that we are all striving in the same direction toward the philosophy of the Kyorin University Department of Anesthesiology.
Since I introduced team scrubs, doctors and nurses from other departments have told me, "The anesthesiology uniforms look so cool!" This makes me very happy.
