Introduction to the hospital and nursing department
Tokyo Bay Urayasu Ichikawa Medical Center is in Urayasu City, Chiba Prefecture. Although a relatively new hospital opened in 2009, it significantly supports local medical care.
It is a life-saving emergency center designated by Chiba Prefecture and has a well-developed emergency medical system. It is also characterized by many pioneering initiatives, such as online medical consultations and the introduction of an unprecedented education system. Aiming to be "a new hospital image that can be used worldwide," the staff, including doctors and nurses, work together to provide high-quality medical care.
The nursing department's philosophy is "fulfilling our mission as a life supporter for the people of the community" and aims to provide nursing that satisfies the local community.
They support each and every one of their staff in being close to the hearts of their patients and advancing their careers.
Purpose and impressions of the introduction of white coats and scrubs
We interviewed the nursing staff at Tokyo Bay Urayasu Ichikawa Medical Center about their impressions of the Classico uniforms.

"A uniform that suits Tokyo Bay, which seeks newness and diversity"
Tokyo Bay Urayasu Ichikawa Medical Center
Nursing Director Suzuki Tamae
This hospital changes its uniforms every five years. Each time, a uniform selection committee is set up to select the uniforms, and the theme has always been "Choose something easy for us to wear and decide for ourselves."
This time, we introduced Classico uniforms mainly in the ICU and emergency outpatient department. Since we move around a lot at these sites, ease of movement is essential. In addition, since we often assist with examinations and medical procedures, it was also important that the fabric does not get damaged much, even if it gets dirty.
Also, they are very stylish, aren't they? This is very important, and we wear scrubs for most of the day and 16 hours for night shifts. Since we wear them for a long time, working in something we like motivates the staff. The staff have been very pleased with them. Many nurses from other teams have expressed their envy.
This time, we used beige as a new color and were a little worried at first. But once we started using it, everyone looked very cool. They said that it's cool but also easy to move around in. For example, it's easy to raise your arm to connect x, your pants don't slip down when you squat, and your underwear lines don't show.
I also liked the fact that it was customizable. The pockets were double-layered so that small items could be separated. Also, since we use a PHS for medical use, we had a strap holder added. Of course, it costs extra, but we wanted to be particular about it, and we're grateful that they responded very sincerely.
The uniform primarily creates the image of the profession. Our generation worked under the idea that "nurses' uniforms must be white" and "we must not destroy the image of the world." However, times have changed a lot; for example, some people want to become nurses because they admire the incredible nurses in medical dramas.
The selection committee had always voiced a desire to wear uniforms that reflected their individuality, and the policy was to acknowledge staff diversity. As times change, both the medical and nursing fields must change. Tokyo Bay would like to take the lead in introducing uniforms as a new challenge, and take on this challenge hospital-wide.
"The uniform is the best tool to express ourselves."
Kimura Miei is the deputy director of nursing at the same hospital
The scrubs are made of perfect fabric. Uniforms are washed industrially, so they tend to fade and become thin. It has been more than six months since we introduced these scrubs, but this has not happened, and they remain soft and comfortable to wear.
Staff members say that these are "easy to move in." This time, we introduced them to departments involving much movement, such as the emergency outpatient department and ICU, so ease of movement was essential. Nurses can be so focused on caring for patients that they don't have time to care for themselves. Not having to worry about difficulty moving by wearing a comfortable uniform will make it easier for nurses to work. Tokyo Bay Urayasu Ichikawa Medical Center has many young head nurses, so in the past, it was often said that it was difficult to tell them apart from the young staff. Since the last change, we have been using different colors for scrubs according to job title, and Classico's scrubs also matched well in that respect since they come in a wide variety of colors. For example, it is convenient for interns to tell them apart by color even when they rotate between departments.
Of course, it also helps to increase motivation. Our hospital has a blog on our website, and we are working to spread the honest voices of our staff to the world. We call this "fan creation," and the more people who know the hospital's name, the more we can work hard.
I think uniforms are the best tool for expressing ourselves. This hospital is very positive about trying new things, and people who want to do cutting-edge things gather here. The selection of these scrubs also met that desire.
"They even confirmed the concept before proposing"
Fumiko Watanabe, Head Nurse at the same hospital
This uniform change had a theme, and four things were important: unisex, choice of colors, comfort that can withstand long hours of work, and cool appearance.
Classico's scrubs were the perfect fit.
We ordered products from various companies, and Classico sent us many different types. We looked at too many and didn't know which one was best. We told them what we wanted, and the person in charge could choose the one that fit, which was very helpful.
During our conversation, Classico was the only one who asked us what our concept or theme was and what our intention was for introducing the uniforms. They also responded to our emails quickly, which was another reason we chose them. This is not just flattery!
After actually wearing them, I like the shape and comfort the most. The shiny material doesn't feel like work clothes, so it looks neat when welcoming customers from outside. The staff also praise them for being easy to move in. People joining the hospital often work there because they can wear cool scrubs.
We recently had our first male head nurse. The uniforms we had been wearing were only for women and were out of date, but this time, we could introduce designs for men. We introduced uniforms for both men and women but left it up to the individual to choose which design they wanted. Many women also prefer men's designs. I am glad we could introduce something that suits this age of diversity.
