Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Clinic at Juntendo University Hospital
Hospital and team introduction
The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Clinic at Juntendo University Hospital, attached to the School of Medicine, is a department with a long history that was separated from the surgery department of the same university in 1963. It has four central pillars: operating room anesthesia, pain clinic, obstetric anesthesia, and intensive care, and each specialist is in charge of medical treatment. In addition, anesthesiologists are responsible for pre-operative examinations and post-operative management, not just during surgery. The team is characterized by an open atmosphere that does not make you feel the difference in age or specialty. While anesthesiologists often work in different locations depending on their specialty or the ward they are in charge of, everyone in the department works daily with an awareness of teamwork.
We interviewed the doctors at the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Clinic at Juntendo University Hospital, attached to the School of Medicine, about their impressions.
Purpose and Thoughts on Introducing Team Lab Coats
"Classico meet international standards and are scrubs we are proud of wearing rather than something forced to wear "
Juntendo University School of Medicine Juntendo Hospital Anesthesiology and Pain Clinic Head Professor Dr. Kawagoe Izumi
We decided to introduce Classico scrubs this time because of the JCI (Joint Commission International) certification. Our hospital is JCI-certified and is recognized as a medical facility that "guarantees international standards for medical quality and patient safety." Previously, we wore cotton surgical gowns made of the same material as the old coverings. Still, when we renewed our JCI certification, one of the points we were told to make was the material of the scrubs, and we needed to change to something that would not scatter fibers into the surgical field (such as synthetic fibers). At that time, we had a good connection with Classico and decided to introduce them.
Our hospital has a rule that scrubs should not be worn in the outpatient department except for treatment outpatients. Everyone used to wear their own scrubs and lab coats for outpatient procedures, but now they wear Classico scrubs instead, and they are well-received by patients. When we first showed the director the Classico scrubs, he praised their cleanliness and style and gave us permission to introduce them.
Including part-time staff, just under 100 members are in this anesthesiology department. Although we work in different departments, such as the pain clinic outpatient department and the ICU, we all wear the same uniform, so it was good that we were able to recognize within the hospital that "those scrubs are for anesthesiology." I think it is easy for patients to tell that "this doctor is an anesthesiologist."
I like the design, and it looks stylish, whether tight or loose. It's nice to be able to wear it the way you want. The color is dark, and I didn't like it initially. But I thought it would look dark because it was dark, and I was surprised that it made my face look brighter when I wore it. It looks good on everyone, from teachers around 25 years old to teachers over 60 years old.
The embroidery on the back is also a point, and in addition to the Juntendo logo, it has the letters of the department (lecture) name "Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine." I wanted all the staff in the department, including the outpatient doctors at the pain clinic, to wear it, so I added these letters. After I decided on the outline of the design, I asked them to come up with several color patterns, and we decided on this shape. In addition, the pants are also embroidered.
JCI certification was the impetus for introducing team scrubs, but the biggest goal was to have everyone like and wear the new uniform. There was a desire to make it something that people would "want to wear" and be proud of wearing rather than something they were forced to wear because of rules. I was able to achieve that by choosing Classico scrubs.
"They don't wrinkle easily, so even if I'm called suddenly, I can go out in public immediately."
Dr. Maho Kakemizu, Chief of the Operating Room Department, the same department
Many more scrubs are available than before, and they come in various designs, colors, and materials. So, when we started introducing them, we had fun choosing the products.
At first, I thought the ones I chose this time would only look good on people with a good physique. But when I tried them on, everyone looked very smart. When I put them on, I felt like I had to be sharp, and my posture improved. Doctors in other departments also said that they looked cool.
The previous ones had large pants, so some people looked sloppy. However, these scrubs can be worn in outpatient clinics, and the slim design means they don't get caught or get in the way during procedures, so everyone is grateful.
I use scrubs even when I'm on duty. I like to wear something comfortable and easy to wear for long periods. Lab coats are essential because they symbolize and express the doctor. I sleep in my scrubs on duty, but when I wake up in my previous ones, they get wrinkled... When I was called and must deal with an emergency, I sometimes wonder, "Am I really okay to go in like this wrinkled scrub?" But these new scrubs hardly get wrinkled, so I can always look neat when dealing with patients.
"It's comfortable because I no longer have to worry about the rough texture or trouble tying strings."
Same department, [Operating room department] Ward chief, Kawachiyama Saisen Teacher
I knew about Classico before and thought of them as a fashionable brand of lab coats. I had seen them at a booth at an academic conference, but I wasn't particularly picky about what to wear at work, so I'd never touched or tried them on.
This is the first time I've worn Classico scrubs, and what I like most about them is how they feel against the skin. The fabric of the previous ones was a bit stiff, but that's gone now, and they're comfortable. Also, the scrub pants I wore before had a drawstring that would sometimes come loose while I was moving, but the new ones have full elastic waist, so they're very comfortable to wear. So it's easy.
At our hospital, the rule is that the anesthesiology department wears green scrubs, so I was shown all the green products and decided on these scrubs. There were light green options, but the opinion was that a darker color would be more subdued and would make a better impression on patients, so we went with these.
Although they are in the same green color, the scrubs we had up until now were true green, so the impression has changed quite a bit and become more stylish.

"These are scrubs that I've always wanted to try, and they've brought a fresh look to the medical department."
Same department [Operating Room Department] Anesthesiology Specialist
Dr. Ikuka Hasegawa
This was my first time wearing Classico scrubs. They are very comfortable to wear and feel nice against the skin. They are stretchy, so it is very easy to stand and sit. I also like that the fabric is not too thin but smooth, so you don't have to worry about sweating, and that the pockets are doubled so you can put things that tend to fall out.
I have never bought scrubs, and I don't have an environment where I can freely choose scrubs at work, so I have secretly wanted to try wearing something stylish like this at least once. I occasionally heard my university classmates say, "I bought Classico scrubs," so...
It may be because I am wearing something different from before, but the atmosphere in the medical department has changed a little. Everyone, even the older generation of doctors, is wearing the same new scrubs, so I talked to the younger doctors about how the medical department feels fresh.
I've only been here for about a year, so some unfamiliar faces exist. But even if I work in a different ward, I can tell the anesthesiologist by the scrubs, so I feel a little happy when I pass by doctors in the same scrubs in the hospital.
